Choosing a baby pillow for a baby is actually not an easy task. Previously when Dylan was still a cutesy little cupcake, my mother-in-law often reminded me to let him sleep on his sides, or best, put him in a bouncy cradle because the sarong will go around his head, ensuring that his soft skull won't get flattened due to excessive sleeping on the back of his head.

Of course, back then, I was a scaredy-cat mother who read too much bad news on Sudden Infant Deaths. I was morbidly terrified of leaving my baby on his sides, worrying that he may accidentally roll over and smother himself while I was napping or doing something else.

As such, Dylan had to bear with a flat head for quite a couple of months:

Dylan at 7 months old. Awww.

Notice the back of his head is flattened?

Thank goodness flat-heads can be gradually corrected as the baby grows and is able to flip to their sides. Dylan no longer has a flat head anymore, but you bet I got nagged at by many, many people when he was younger!

This time, Alexis is a little luckier than her elder brother. Big thanks to Sofzsleep, Alexis got a Baby Donut Pillow to sleep on!

I've TWO Baby Donut Pillows to giveaway so please read on!

Y U SO CUTE!
Sofzsleep Donut Pillow has a crater in the middle of the pillow, so that Alexis' head can fit snugly within it. This reduces the pressure of a flat surface on her soft head, which could cause the skull to flatten due to prolonged period on a ‘back rest’ position. The use of this pillow helps a baby to develop a nice rounded head and aids in the prevention of Plagiocephaly.

Here's how the pillow looks like without its cover:

Before we were blessed with a Sofzsleep Baby Donut Pillow, Alexis was using a hand-me-down from Dylan. It was also a donut pillow, but it was one with synthetic filling.

The good thing about synthetic pillows is that it is largely affordable and great against allergy, but it also has a really short life span because synthetic pillows can go out of shape really quickly. Before I know it, there were no more 'filling' under the crater - it was empty and everything else has shifted to the side because of the constant head pressure!

Material

Personally, I like Sofzsleep Baby Donut Pillow because it is made from 100% latex. If you don't already know, latex pillows and beds are one of the most sought after bedding accessories because they are made naturally and is one of the most lasting material used in bedding products.

Pressure Relief

The biggest reason why babies end up having a flat head is because of the persistent pressure applied on their soft skull for a prolong period of time. As such, having a pillow that is good at relieving this pressure will be great to prevent another flat-head episode in my family!

Sofzsleep Baby Donut pillow has very good pressure distribution because the latex molecules act like little tiny springs. As such, it is able to shape itself to Alexis' head and neck, offering very good pressure relief.

I would compare this 'flexiblity' alike to memory foam, except that latex has an open cell structure that promotes optimal air and moisture circulation which are essential for a healthy sleep environment.

Dust Mite Resistant

I've read a lot on articles on the adverse effects of dust mites on children and honestly, it scares the hell out of me because dust mites can be very persistent and difficult to eliminate. Do you know that in dormancy, dust mites are resistant to poison? As such, even if you decide to whip out your ultimate insecticide, it will be futile against it.

As such, the only way to stop dust mites from thriving is to make the environment as unsuitable as possible. One way is to expose whatever that can trap dust - curtains, bedsheets etc to direct sunlight. Another way is to reduce humidity, for example, using a dehumidifier, or using a pillow/bed that does not trap perspiration.

Exactly so, this is why latex beds and pillows are highly popular is because of its natural antibiotic properties. It's excellent ventilation also makes it less habitable for dust mites and microbes, so it is an ideal choice for people sensitive to allergens. Some of the best benefits of latex include mould and mildew resistant, antimicrobial, and resistant to fungus. I may be using a polyester pillow at the moment (which I'm intending to change very soon!) but knowing that Alexis is sleeping on a toxic-free and allergens-safe pillow, I can fall asleep with a peace of mind at night.

Many Varieties

Apart from Baby Donut Pillows, Sofzsleep also has children latex mattresses and playpen bedding as well.

Of course, there is also a wide variety for the adults with their Classic Pillows, Design Pillows, Contour Pillows, their signature Trilogy latex bed... whether you want to have a firm bed, a medium firm bed, they have it all. You can also customise your own latex bed too!
