[Review] Nando's Latest Cataplana

Monday, April 16, 2012

Last weekend, Nian and I finally found some time to drop by Nando's latest outlet at Tampines Mall to try their latest spice-rice recipe.

At first look with the product image, I was really excited. You see, the Cataplana comes in two different range of ingredients: The Originale and The Porto.

Originale consists of the popular flame-grilled Peri-peri chicken thighs, spice rice, bell peppers, courgettes (or more familiarly known as zucchini - something like a cucumber), onions and tomatoes.

Sounds delicious! I love everything about the ingredients in the Originale!

The Porto consists of the Peri-peri chicken thighs, spice rice, black mushrooms, olives and a sprinkle of parsely.

Apart from the olives, I think I will enjoy this variant of the Cataplana too.

It is very easy to spot and ask for the Cataplana as they have a really cute design for their menu. In fact, you can add on a glass of Rosa Fresca at $4.90 to complete your meal.

Service at the Nando's Tampines Mall was really good as well. As compared to the previous time when I went to the Bugis outlet with the Tuesday Girls (can't seem to find the post anymore!), I'd say the service at the former was waaaaay better.

Played with my new camera while we waited for the food.

Our Rosa Fresca came first. Tasting slightly like the Shirley Temple, we found this specially concocted drink very refreshing for a hot day. I love the minty feel from the mint leaves that I can actually taste!

When our main course came, I was kinda disappointed actually because it looked so different from the picture! The one above is the Originale, and the one bottom is the Porto.

They never told me that Originale had peas. I hate peas. :(

That aside, I think the spice rice is salty yet sour at the same time. It's kinda hard to actually grasp what kinda taste is that, but I would think it would be rather good as an appetizer. The strong flavours actually whets up appetite.

The flame-grilled chicken was a bit tasteless and dry though. Probably slightly overcooked.

Originale rating: 2.5/5

Nian had the Porto, which has a generous serving of olives - both black and green ones. I prefer this variation of the Cataplana because their black mushrooms are very tasty!

Somehow, it seems that all the goodness of the rice ended up in the mushrooms.. because it was so flavourful. If only they had given us a bigger portion of it. (And take away those nasty peas please!)

Porto rating: 3.5/5

We tried the chicken with their Peri-peri sauce. You can find a range of mild to spicy on the tables when you are seated.

Well, I've to say that you'd definitely need these sauces for that extra punch in the flame-grilled thighs.

We ended the meal with a double-scoop ice-cream, which was average as well.

All in all, I would think that the Cataplana deserves a try - at least the Porto variation. Do aim for the mushrooms, if you're a mushroom lover like me. You won't regret it. :D

While the serving is just nice for one person, I'd recommend it to be shared among a group of 2 to 4 people as the taste is pretty strong. It may get a bit jer-lat after a few mouths.

Do drink the Rosa Fresca as well, I find it really refreshing and not too sweet. And maybe, it may set the right palette for you on your Cataplana. :)

Nando's will be giving away 1 free Cataplana of your choice if you order five chicken meals. Offer is valid until 31 July 2012, so I think it's a good time to bring all of your friends down and try this new dish!

Cataplana Originale and Porto are retailing at $19.90 each, with a top-up of $4.90 for the Rosa Fresca at all Nando's outlets.
